Procedures Upon Death

What to do in the event of the death of a loved one?

The death of a loved one is a painful experience. The sorrow of losing someone dear is, unfortunately, accompanied by unavoidable formalities.

Some must be completed quickly: a series of declarations to be made, the preparation of the funeral, as well as financial procedures.

Since, in this difficult moment, you will have many other things on your mind, our task here is to present you with a guide to the steps that need to be taken.

In The First Hours

  • Contact Elie and Sons.

  • Have the death certified by a doctor: this is a legal requirement in Mauritius. At the hospital/clinic, this certification is done automatically. If the death does not occur in a hospital, Elie and Sons will contact a doctor to establish the cause of death.

  • Appoint a family member or close relative who will act as the main point of contact between the family and Elie and Sons.

  • Elie and Sons will take care of the deceased’s body and all related services, while supporting you in organizing the ceremonies according to the family’s wishes.

Within 24 Hours

  • Inform relatives and friends.

  • Administrative formalities can be handled by you or by Elie and Sons upon request:

  • Announcement on radio/newspapers

  • Civil registry procedures

  • Sanitary office procedures

  • Cemetery/crematorium arrangements

  • Any other arrangements: repatriation, priests, Buddhist monks, pandits, ayas, lay ministers, etc.

  • Important documents needed:

  • The deceased’s national ID card

  • Marriage certificate (if applicable)

  • Birth certificate

  • Doctor’s certificate stating the cause of death, with mention of early burial or cremation B if applicable.

Within 30 Days

  • Sort and keep the deceased’s important papers.

  • Contact the Social Security office: you may be eligible for certain benefits (family support allowance, ceremony expenses allowance, housing aid) depending on your family situation.

  • If the deceased was receiving a pension (retirement, etc.) or allowances (e.g., unemployment), inform the relevant agencies to avoid repayment of overpaid sums.
